Who We Are
Arise & Awake Kenya is a grassroots organization dedicated to building the soul of our nation by nurturing citizens of strong character, values, and purpose. We believe that true nation-building is not just about building infrastructure—it is about shaping people who embody discipline, patriotism, and selfless service.
Kenya is blessed with extraordinary gifts: breathtaking landscapes, abundant natural resources, and a cultural mosaic of 44 ethnic groups, each carrying unique traditions, values, and skills. With a literacy rate of nearly 87%, our nation is one of the most educated in Africa. Yet despite these advantages, Kenya continues to struggle with insecurity, tribalism, corruption, and unemployment—obstacles that hold back our progress.
For decades, Africa has received trillions of dollars in international aid (over USD 2.6 trillion in the last 60 years). Yet poverty and dependency remain entrenched. The problem lies not in the goodwill of aid, but in its approach. Too often, the focus has been on treating symptoms—handing out food, medicine, or donations—without addressing the deeper causes. This has unintentionally stripped communities of self-initiative and dignity, creating cycles of dependency.
It is time to reframe the narrative. As the African proverb reminds us: “We have not inherited this land from our forebears; we have borrowed it from our children.”
Our responsibility is not only to preserve Kenya’s natural wealth but also to nurture a generation of citizens who will rise above personal interest, tribal divisions, and short-term gains—citizens who will place the welfare of the nation above all else.
The Purpose
For any nation to live in harmony, overcome challenges, and make progress, its people must first develop a strong sense of oneness and a shared commitment to building the nation.
It is often said, “People make the Nation.” Nation-building, therefore, is about building people. If citizens of strong character and values are in abundance, everything else—progress, prosperity, and peace—will naturally follow.
If Kenya is to rise, there is an urgent need to nurture selfless, patriotic, and proud Kenyans who contribute to the welfare of all, regardless of tribe, status, or background. To achieve this, individuals must often rise above personal needs for the sake of society.
We must develop:
- Cultural values that bind us together.
- Patriotism that inspires service to the nation.
- Character that earns respect and trust.
- Responsibility towards one another and the nation at large.
- Discipline and Dedication to work tirelessly towards national progress.
- Resolve to stay true to the path of transformation, even in the face of challenges.
Arise & Awake Kenya has been formed with this single-minded mission: to imbibe Kenyans with cultural values and character, for this is the root problem that affects all nation-building efforts.
How Arise & Awake Kenya Began
In January 2015, a group of volunteers visited a long-running feeding program on the outskirts of Nairobi. For nearly three decades, the program had provided meals to more than 1,500 children every Sunday.
During conversations with the organizers, a sobering truth emerged: many of the parents of these children had once stood in the very same line to receive food two decades earlier. Despite years of charity, their lives had not fundamentally changed. The cycle of dependency had simply continued.
This realization posed a hard question: Will the next generation also grow up waiting in line for handouts?
What began as an act of compassion had unintentionally fostered dependency, stripping families of initiative and hope. From this awakening came a powerful conviction: Kenya does not need endless charity—it only needs to nurture its people.
True progress comes not from aid but from empowerment. The future of our nation depends on raising citizens of good character—selfless, disciplined, and dedicated to the common good.
Our Mission
To inspire a generation of responsible Kenyan citizens—grounded in values, driven by purpose, and dedicated to uplifting their communities.
Our Vision
A prosperous, united, and self-reliant Kenya—where dignity replaces dependency, and service becomes a way of life.
Our Beginning
Later in 2015, the first Tawi was launched in Kawangware, Nairobi. It began as a small weekly circle of students engaged in games, physical activities, storytelling, and value-based discussions. Slowly but surely, transformation became visible.
- Students once shy grew in confidence.
- Those who lacked discipline became punctual and responsible.
- Children began to see themselves not just as individuals, but as citizens of a greater whole—Kenya.
What started as a single seed in Kawangware has grown into a nationwide organization. Today, Arise & Awake Kenya continues to expand its work, cultivating a generation ready to rise, serve, and transform the nation.
Our Philosophy
Nation-building begins with people. When individuals transform, society transforms. And when society transforms, the nation rises.
Arise & Awake Kenya exists to ignite this transformation—one child, one community, and one citizen at a time.
